EU Energy Performance in Buildings Directive
In
Ireland, buildings contribute over 40% of the
countries CO2 emissions through energy consumption for heating,
cooling, lighting and other services. In order to meet the energy reduction
targets set out by the Kyoto protocol the EU Energy Performance in
Buildings Directive was adopted into Irish Law as Regulation in 2006.
The EPBD requires by law that each building constructed, rented or sold has a
current Building Energy Rating Certificate to demonstrate its potential energy use.
Public building, including schools, are not expected to be rented or sold and therfore they are required to produce an Energy Rating Certificate based on actual energy use. This operational rating will be produced on an annual basis and the resulting certificate must be displayed in a public area.
The legislation does not currently require an advice sheet to accompany this certificate.
